Minecraft. Popular around the world. The subject of the next Telltale episodic storytelling adventure. Worth billions of dollars. Arguably the most important, biggest, famous video game in the history of the genre. And because of that, it has had a gigantic impact in changing how the gaming world has changed and evolved in the past few years. Because of Minecraft, we have more crafting systems, we have more building games that foster creativity, and boxes are more popular than ever!
And of course, we have Minecraft clones. But none have been based off a licensed, extremely popular JRPG series before. Introducing: Dragon Quest Builders!
It’s a Japanese Minecraft Clone with the Dragon Quest IP attached!
That’s pretty much all we know right now, other than a winter release and the fact there are no plans to move it over to the West, so this doesn’t affect anyone over here much. That said, how could I not draw attention to it? It’s Minecraft, but exclusive for the PS4, PS3 and PS vita, and it’s Dragon Quest. Whatever that means… level ups? New monsters? Spells or what have you?
I guess the biggest news from all this is just how long it took for a triple A developer to try to ape Minecraft this openly. It’s been a long, long time, Square Enix… you could have at least tried this back in 2008.
