Surprisingly, the hero is named Jesse.

We’ve known about Minecraft: Story Mode for a while now, but other than the fact the amazing Telltale Games (makers of The Walking Dead, A Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, Game of Thrones, ect.) would be behind it, it would be set in the Minecraft world, famous for its decided lack of any story, plot, character, or purpose, outside building stuff and watching it blow up from errant creepers.

Well, that’s been remedied recently with the release of the first trailer for Minecraft: Story Mode, and I have to say… it’s surprisingly… serious?

Players will control protagonist Jesse throughout the season, as portrayed by actor Patton Oswalt. Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order is the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong... something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.

Somehow, when I imagined Minecraft: Story Mode, I imagined it would be a bit like the Lego games: creative, parody games that are soaking in equal parts sincerity and sass. But this had a surprising lack of levity, which was weird, because it was still Minecraft blobs in the blocky Minecraft world, which… just… doesn’t have much drama to it, from my humble perspective.

But maybe, not being the Minecraft fanatics this game is designed for, I’m just missing something. Regardless, the game is coming out for just about everything (PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, compatible iOS devices, and Android)… and that it will be available 'soon.' I guess we’ll have to wait till then to find out more.
