Fallout 4 is already shaping up to be one of the biggest games Bethesda has ever worked on, and the hype around it is tangible. One of the most exciting things we know about the game--at least from a writer’s perspective--is that this will be the first Fallout game that’s fully voice acted… which includes the player character, who will finally say things instead of relying on everyone else’s ability to read the read the dialogue tree.
Well, adding one more voice is enough to make for one big script, and according to Bethesda’s Twitter account, Fallout 4 isn’t just big--it’s gigantic. The game has over 111,000 lines of spoken dialogue, which makes the script as longer than The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and Fallout 3… combined.
That is super-impressive But that amazing feat is dampened, somewhat, when you remember that Bethesda also has a really annoying habit of only hiring a small handful of voice actors and recycling them to the point of nausea. It’s one thing to have a whole ton of lines of dialogue, but if it’s done by the same exhausted guy who recorded 400,000 similar lines all by himself, I think we’d prefer a smaller script.
Still, let’s be optimistic. Bethesda has heard people complain about their voice acting enough to know they need to change--I just hope this is the game where they do that!
