Bungie Talks Resolution and Frame Rate Versus Gameplay

The industry has exaggerated the importance of 1080p and 60fps.

Resolution and frame rate have become a hot button topic for games lately, primarily since the release of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While there are those that want to hold 1080p and 60 frames per second as the standard for what a game must have to be great, Director of Production at Bungie Jonty Barnes doesn't agree.

Speaking with The Sixth Axis, Barnes said that the industry has "magnified" the importance of resolution and frame rate, and that this exaggeration should come second to how a game plays.

"You know, it’s funny. I feel like as an industry, people are caring less and less about numbers, which is great. It always used to be about graphics, and though 1080p and 60Hz are still out there, and as platform providers get competitive around those things it seems to magnify the importance of it.

But it isn’t about that, it’s actually what is an awesome gameplay experience for the player and anything that gets in the way of the best player experience is baggage. I’m quoting directly from Jason [Jones, Bungie co-founder] there and, you know, as we’ve seen over the last few years, computer games are so much better, they’re so much higher quality, and it’s much more about the experience and less about those statistics."

Recently, Bungie spoke out about how its upcoming MMO-shooter Destiny would stack up on the Xbox One when compared to the PlayStation 4, stating that the Xbox version would not be a "dumbed down" version compared to the more powerful PS4.

Destiny is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on September 9th, and Bungie's promotion is starting to come in full force, such as the company's recently released launch trailer.

Sometime after the game comes out, all players, whether on PlayStation or Xbox will be able to download the game's first expansion called The Dark Below, which will add new content to all of the game's modes.
