At Sony's Gamescom press conference last week, Bungie announced that the first Destiny expansion would be released this December.

The expansion is known as The Dark Below, and is one of the two DLC packs that Bungie's currently working on. But alongside the announcement of the DLC, Bungie has gone into a bit more detail as to what the expansion will actually entail.

Speaking with Joystiq, Bungie's Director of Production Jonty Barnes revealed that while the game will have its own story content, it will expand on the game in a way that you'll still run into players who aren't playing through the downloadable content.

"The Dark Below is actually a really interesting expansion; it's got its own story," said Barnes. "We call it an expansion because it has one of all the activity types from Destiny, so it's story, strike and beyond – and competitive and cooperative experiences in there. As well as new gear, new armor, new weapons and everything else. Some of that attaches to existing places that you're familiar to, so you might find that as you're going through new areas, that you actually collide with players who are just playing the existing Destiny content. You'll have those collisions. We always want to create spaces where people can get together and cooperate, and we feel like that is a big innovation in Destiny."

Essentially this means that while The Dark Below will have plenty of its own original content, certain parts of the DLC will overlap areas that exist in Destiny proper. It also indicates that the expansion will have new content across all facets of Destiny, including the modes outside the game's story, such as the competitive modes, along with additions to your equipment you'll be gathering as you play the game.

Recently, Bungie spoke about how different console's versions of Destiny will match up against each other when the game is ultimately released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on September 9th.
