The Sims series, which has always been more-or-less a bastion for gender and sexual inclusion, has nonetheless been held back in some regards. For example, while even the first Sims could be gay, it wasn't until the third game that they could actually marry (which might just be a case of art imitating life). Likewise, while there was certainly lots of gay representation, there wasn't much in the way of transgender representation, as certain clothes, behaviors, and voices were unique to one gender or the other. But in a new update for The Sims 4, EA and Maxis are finally changing that--making the game both more inclusive and worth buying even without the ludicrously expensive DLC.
With this new update, all the former barriers that had been erected around character creation are simply gone. Regardless of gender, you can have any physique, any voice, any hair, and any clothes. And if your Sim just feels like a stranger in their own body, you can also swap their genders at any time.
Now, this is hardly revolutionary in the gaming industry--I mean, Saints Row, guys--but it's still really encouraging... not just for the transgender community, but also for people who like making really weird, irregular characters. Absolute, true character customization need not be a dream, we can make it a reality in this lifetime!
Still, good job Maxis and EA. The SJW in me applauds you enthusiastically.
