Yooka-Laylee Special Edition Comes with a Decorative N64 Cartridge

Super cool.

Playtonic released Yooka-Laylee last year, and despite being an intentional callback to the Rare style of Nintendo 64- era mascot platformer, the game’s Wii U edition was canceled and it was only ever released for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Which, you know, kind of misses the entire target audience, but it’s okay, as apparently, the game wasn’t’ very good when it first came out, although apparently, it has gotten better thanks to a few patches here and there.

Regardless, the Nintendo Switch version is still on the way, and over on Twitter, Playtonic decided to show off the special Switch Collector’s edition. That alone wouldn’t be too big a deal, but what’s really cool about this is what it comes with: there’s a napkin thing, the soundtrack, and the game itself, of course, but the special edition (which is $75) also comes with a Nintendo 64 cartridge of the game, and an old N64-style game box. That, my friends, is some spicy nostalgia bait.

Now before you get too excited, no, the cartage does not work: it’s purely decorative. But Yooka-Laylee is planning to add a “retro-style” graphics setting that will intentionally look like an old N64 platformer, so you can always just put it in your N64 and make-believe. Plus, if you were a 64-bit backer on Kickstarter, you should be getting a special discount code for this edition that will give you a discounted price; we’re not sure how big the discount is, but it’s supposedly “significant.”

In any case, it’s good to see the game on the platform it was really designed for this whole time, and the extra nostalgia stuff there just makes it all the better. Not sure it’s on my wish-list just yet, but I still can’t get over how cool the cartridge thing is.

Makes me miss the good ol' days.
