Man, look at Yooka-Laylee, making headlines like a triple-A game! Hot off the press following the announcement of their release date, the studio behind everyone's future favorite chameleon and bat, Playtonic, have come forward with two announcements: the first, predictably, simply re-confirms that the game's unofficial release date, April 11th, 2017, was indeed correct, and we'll be able to join the pair in their fight to save the world's books early next year. So that's nice. The second announcement, however, is sure to make any Nintendo fan cringe.
The Wii U version of the game, promised to Kickstarter backers when the fundraising began last year, has been canceled. So now, gamers with the Wii U will, unfortunately, be deprived of the spiritual sequel to Banjo-Kazoo...
...Unless, of course, they get a Switch, which is where Yooka-Laylee will be released instead.
It's not surprising that the folks at Playtonic would switch development to the Switch (it's simply the more economic and technical choice), and it'll probably be good for Nintendo to have such an attractive game as a (near) launch title, but it's still kind of a bummer for the Wii U, which isn't ending so much with a bang as with a pathetic whimper, which... is appropriate, if nothing else.
Can't help but fee bad for Wii U owners though, if they don't plan on updating. One more punch to the face before the holidays, huh?
