So, XCOM 2 is doing well so far, receiving many positive reviews and the accolades of the most ardent fans of the series. Granted, as a console gamer, I was a bit bummed this didn’t get a console release, but I understand why Firaxis decided to keep it a PC exclusive--developing for multiple systems is a drain on resources and time, and strategy games like XCOM 2 tend to do best on PC anyway. Plus, with so many high-profile failed ports of console games flooding the PC market, it makes sense they’d want to avoid that mess altogether and just ship a perfectly functional PC game, right?

Well…

Turns out, while keeping things dedicated to PC ports might improve things, it doesn’t magically wipe all your problems away: on certain rigs, players have been complaining that the game has a serious frame rate problem, one that Firaxis wasn’t able to anticipate. One that it’s now ‘working furiously’ to fix. Lead Designer Jake Solomon writes to Rock Paper Shotgun:

“[The technical issues are] the first thing we talk about about when we come in in the morning. We take it incredibly seriously. Me and all the leads, that’s what we work on all day and that’s what we’re committed to right now. Maybe this is damning on me, but I’m sitting here talking to you now on the laptop I use to play it on, and I didn’t see these issues. We didn’t catch this stuff in compatibility testing. We’re fully, fully accountable for the product in people’s hands, so we certainly take responsibility for it. To people who are suffering them, if they’re frustrated, I’m as frustrated and more. We will continue to update the game, and we do have some workarounds – heck, you guys even posted some workarounds – but we definitely have fixes coming soon.”

Gotta say, while this is a bit heavy handed as apologies go, but at least they’re not making excuses--you really get the impression they care. That’s all I really ask of my developers--to error is human, no one is flawless, but as long as they take responsibility and work to fix the problem, that’s all we can really ask, right?

Regardless, keep holding out, commander. Fixes will be around shortly.
