Microsoft announced a revamped system for the Xbox Live Avatar feature during last year's E3, with plans to have it ready for Windows 10 users before 2018. While delayed, the tech giant allegedly has plans to preview the new system next month.
Microsoft employees already have access to the new avatars, and the Xbox Alpha group of testers will gain access before the general public does.
The new system, with characters looking rather like Pixar characters, will be more diverse than what's currently available. The initial trailer (seen above) shows us new customization, including options to better represent those with disabilities. We also see a more expansive selection of props, and an in-depth color wheel for nearly all features.
Like the console before, the new avatar system will be integrated into the Xbox One dashboard and will be available on the home screen area. Shortly after its launch, Microsoft also plans to implement an avatar store, where users can purchase additional customization options.
The new system is through the Unity engine, allowing a greater deal of flexibility when it comes to customizing assets. Sources tell us that Microsoft will eventually allow third-party developers to build their own props and clothing, and sell these items in Microsoft's digital store.
We're truly returning to the familiar feeling of Microsoft's biggest console, the Xbox 360.
