According to Divisive industry analyst Michael Pachter during Pachter Factor on SIFTD, Sony has more or less surpassed Xbox One this generation, locking it down for good. After all, the PlayStation 4 sold 30 million sales worldwide, and the funny thing is that the Xbox One is no longer reporting hardware numbers.
Here's the question from a SIFTD user:
At this point what can Microsoft do, if anything, to close the gap between the Xbox One and PS4?
Pachter's response? "Nothing."
He goes on to declare that the PlayStation 1 sold roughly 110 million units whereas the PlayStation 2 sold 170 million units. Microsoft's most profitable console, the X360, only sold 80 million units, so fewer than half the amount of the PS2.
"We should start every console cycle assuming that Sony's going to outsell Microsoft two to one, because they have twice as many people who know what their console is and like it."
So more or less, Sony has sealed its victory, and it seems that Microsoft--though it hasn't done all that well in some countries *coughJapancough*--will probably be focusing its efforts to the US.
"My guess is Microsoft is going to really try hard to win in the US, and it's probably going to fail. They're going to hope to win globally and they're definitely going to fail. It is not because they suck. It's because first party content is not differentiated enough between PlayStation and Xbox to make a difference."
But there is some positivity in this, noting that it's not always about the clashing of the consoles:
"As long as they make a profit and sell a lot of boxes, they win. It doesn't matter who finishes first in the console race."
To me anyway, that's all that matters.
