Xbox May Have Leaked Console VR Support With Headset Notifications

Xbox may have accidentally leaked the existence of a virtual reality headset for the console. And of all the things to do it, it was their new Xbox Wireless Headset.

In a report by IGN Italy (brought to our attention by VGC), when you plug in the pre-release review version of the Xbox Wireless Headset, a message displays that translates to The VR Headset needs to be updated. Additional messages were later found, all referencing a VR Headset, implying that this is not a typo.

Since its official public release, the Xbox Wireless Headset has not displayed any messages regarding VR.

This is an interesting development. PlayStation managed to really stand out with the previous generation with the PlayStation VR. And theyre confirmed to be working on a PSVR 2 model for the PS5. There was word of Xbox making a competing VR system, but the idea was eventually scrapped before made public. Last we heard, Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer claimed that while he appreciates VR, its not something that the company is focusing on.

My main point was, I wanted to be clear with our customers on where our focus was. So that if somebody was waiting for us to bring out a VR headset for Series X, at the launch or something were not going to do that.

There remains to be a great deal here left unanswered. Is Xbox still working on a VR headset and Spencer is just downplaying it, due to development delays? Are these messages just left over snippets from back when they were working on it, and since trashed the project?

We would absolutely love a virtual reality Halo game. And we know that wont happen until Xbox hunkers down on VR as an entertainment medium. We hope it's soon, but leaks like this might just be getting our hopes up. Time will tell.
