Microsoft is considered one of the big three console developers in the world right now, but thinking about it logistically, most of their success in the world of video games comes from the fact they make Windows, the preferred operating system (arguably the only one) for gaming. They’ve doubled-down on that particular strength by making it so that nearly every game that can be played on the Xbox One can also be played on Windows, which is cool, but it also means the Xbox is kind of redundant at this point. A good, strong PC is now, objectively better than a Xbox One in all respects except one (price), since it can’t really have exclusives anymore.
But despite this ‘flaw’, Microsoft is still looking to blur the lines between the console and PC world, according to a report/rumor from Windows Central, which claims to have procured a number of documents that say that Microsoft and Razer have been (and might still be) teaming up to produce a special mouse and keyboard for the Xbox One.
The year-old documents list a number of implementation issues and technology the two parties had pinpointed in order to make the idea viable. For example, Microsoft says that the Turret and BlackWindows devices could work well with the Xbox One, and that just about any USB mouse could be made compatible with the system. It talked about how they would need to support at least five mouse buttons, pinpointing cursor positions, and even separating keyboard-and-controller-using players in matchmaking cues.
That said, it’s less an issue of if keyboard and mouse support could work for Xbox games – they've been talking about it for a while – and more about if more games could do it. If so, there would basically be nothing separating Xbox One from PC, except maybe the fact you need to pay to be online and you have fewer games to play.
Which isn’t much of a selling point, but I just report the news.
