The Team behind the WWK wrestling games, 2K, have announced the next title to enter the ring. And this time, they're taking more creative liberty to its style. Introducing WWE 2K Battlegrounds.
You might have noticed, in the same way that one notices that they touched their face after handling hot peppers, that the characters look a bit different. In Battlegrounds, the look of realism has been replaced with a style not entirely unlike the small plastic men from the hit 1998 film Small Soldiers.
The game appears to take a more cartoonish style in both its visual design and gameplay mechanics. Instead of traditional wrestling moves and maneuvers, Battlegrounds implements arcade-style actions and over-the-top abilities.
The official announcement post on the WWE 2K website also explains that the game is being developed by Saber Interactive. That's when it all made sense. Saber Interactive is the same studio behind NBA 2K Playgrounds, which applies the same big-head inhuman look to the popular basketball franchise.
That game was received poorly by the community, many criticizing both the visual design of the game and the heavy promotion of microtransactions and additional purchases. It wouldn't surprise us if WWE 2K Battlegrounds follows a similar fate.
WWE 2K Battlegrounds will release sometime this fall.
