Writers Guild Award Nominees Announced

Sometimes it's the writing that makes the game.

Sometimes, instead of focusing on the whole game, we sometimes look at certain aspects, like the art style, the graphics, or the music. Recently, the Writers Guild of America announced the nominations for "Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing."

Writing is very important for many games as great writing serves to immerse the player and to really make the player part of the experience. In reality, writing for a video game is no different than writing for a screenplay or a book. The writer needs to grasp the audience through dialogue and setting.

The nominees, which needed to be released between December 1st, 2013 and November 30th, 2014, are as follows (with the writers in parentheses):

- Alien: Isolation (Dan Abnett, Dion Lay, Will Porter)

- Assassin's Creed Unity (Alexandre Amancio, Sylvain Bernard, Travis Stout, Russell Lees, Darby McDevitt, Ceri Young, Jeffrey Yohalem)

- Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry (Jill Murray, Melissa MacCoubrey, Hugo Giard, Wesley Pincombe)

- The Last of Us: Left Behind (Neil Druckmann)

To also qualify for nomination, the writers needed to be a member of the Writers Guild of America Video Game Writers Caucus or at least applied to become a member. What game do you think should win? I haven't really played any of the nominations, but I have a feeling The Last of Us: Left Behind will be the winner. Remember, let's consider the writing, not the buggy releases (i.e. Assassin's Creed Unity).

The Writers Guild Awards will premiere on Saturday, February 14th, 2015. Not only will video games be part of the show, but there will be winners for various film and television categories.
