Will Agony be Scary or a Let Down?

This actually looks terrifying.

So let's start off by saying that this game looks absolutely terrifying, but that might not reflect the final results. There have been a ton of games that look amazing in their trailers, like Alone in the Dark, but end up being a huge let down. Even games with a fantastic series have grown old after time, like the Resident Evil games. At this point in time, I no longer throw all of my eggs into a horror game basket. That being said, let's jump right into Agony, by MadMind Studios.

Now, MadMind did release a Gameplay Demo Walkthrough video of Agony on YouTube and it looks pretty good. My first impression was that it looks very similar to the new Doom. It seems like it has the same feel as Doom, except I think it's going to be a lot more scary, whereas Doom is more centered around heavy combat. It's a first-person survival horror game that does have some unique aspects to it. For one, you have the ability to possess demons that aren't very smart. If there's something creepy going on and you're not really sure what to do, grab a stupid demon and have him do it. This can be a big advantage and can easily help you survive in messy situations. Sometimes you just have to sit back and use some bait.

In Agony, you play as a tormented soul in Hell. You have no memory of your past or why you're there and the goal is to find your way out. The game is very dark and the gameplay trailer shows the player waving a torch around. You can set fire to parts of the landscape and use it to help light your way, but it's still extremely difficult to see anything around you. Most games like this have a ton of potential, but it's basically ruined by developers that aren't creative enough. The first couple jump scares get you pretty good, but after that they become predictable. "Oh wow. I'm in a dark room with nothing in here but a table. There's no music and I hear crying. Let's walk over to the table and see if there's anything underneath of it..."

All that aside, Agony will be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017. Hopefully we get some more content soon so we can see if this will keep us up at night or eventually make us laugh from its predictability.
