Wii U, PS Vita Port of Hyper Light Drifter Canceled

Two consoles will have to go without.

Hyper Light Drifter, the Dark Souls-like action game that has received more than its fair share of well-earned praise, is yet another game that falls into the comfortably large category of "crowdfunding success." It launched a Kickstarter campaign back in 2013, which was phenomenally successful, having raised 645K of the humble 27K it originally asked for while hitting a good number of stretch goals in the process. One of the goals was to port the game to the Wii U, the runt of console gaming, and the PS Vita, the runt of mobile gaming. The mark was hit, and things were looking groovy, but unfortunately, it's very rare that life goes as planned.

With technical and health issues abound, the creator of Hyper Light Drifter, Alex Preston, has announced that both versions of the game have been scrapped and will no longer be a thing. Fortunately, he followed up that news with some comfortably good-guy assurance: if you had signed up to get a copy of the game for either console, you can either get a new code for one of the systems it is out on (PC, Xbox One, PS4) or you can simply get a full refund. So, that's nice.

Still, it's kind of a bummer that the Wii U and PS Vita, consoles in desperate need for more software, won't be getting such an amazing game. You'd think that Nintendo or Sony would make an effort to accommodate the developer, to help see that happen, but... Sony and Nintendo can be enigmatic, large companies, and it simply might be considered beyond their concern.

Oh well. At least the console wars are over: otherwise certain gamers would be feeling awfully smug right now.
