What We Noticed From The Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Trailer

Dr. Eggman, mostly.

Do you ever lie awake at night, thinking about an awkward moment in your life? That's not entirely unlike the feeling of watching the Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer released earlier today.

That's right, folks. Paramount Pictures released their first movie trailer for the 2019 live-action film, Sonic the Hedgehog. This is our first official look at the titular character in voice and motion, as well as our first real look at Jim Carrey's role as Dr.  Eggman.

There have been trickles of information about the movie over the last several months. Originally it was just movie posters of Sonic's legs and a silhouette of his body outline. They even gave certain folks a special early viewing of this very trailer, which was later described in detail.

Even knowing what I was going to see, I wasn't quite prepared for it. Sonic's weird body shape and fast motions were a bizarre distraction from what otherwise seemed like an interesting movie. Coolio's "Gangster's Paradise" is playing over top of it the whole time, of course.

The trailer focused more on Dr. Eggman than anything. It establishes the plot that Sonic has entered the human world for some reason, and that the only way to stop him (according to the US Government) is to call on a powerful mad scientist, Eggman.

As warned, Eggman appears in thinner form, with a full head of hair and more manageable mustache. It's not until the end of the trailer do we see him with a bald head and more frantic facial hair. We also noticed giant mushrooms in the background, implying some outer world scenario.

If we had to guess, Eggman will get pulled back into Sonic's universe at some point, marking this an origin story for the classic rivalry. But that's just a guess. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie released in theaters on November 8.

I just hope it has plenty of that rock sound so prevalent in Sonic games.
