E3 is a time of awards... and inevitably there will be one game that gets the award of "best of E3". Last year that game was Titanfall (take that for what it's worth) and this year that honor fell on No Man's Sky. This is part of an interesting trend of small teams making amazing games... Titanfall had a core staff of under 100 people- No Man's Sky has a staff of less than a dozen people.
The presence of No Man's Sky didn't have quite the impact of the Titanfall reveal since we've known about the game since the reveal on Spike's (probably final) VGX awards. That's also likely why we didn't even cover the new trailer during E3 while being flooded with new game announcements. That isn't to sell this game short however, a procedural generated space exploration game where you can literally go anywhere is a dream game for many. Having the game come from the developers of the very casual focused Joe Danger series is also a pretty left field moment.
The story leading up to No Man's Sky stealing this year's E3 is a fascinating one... one of humble roots... one of narrowly missing disaster... and definitely worth about 7 minutes of your time to watch. I should also point out while this is a Sony produced video, the game is coming to PC as well... although Hello Games recently said the PC version might not release simultaneously with the PS4 version.
