Ubisoft must be feeling pretty knackered. That, or their coffers are. The major developer/publisher has announced that Watch Dogs Legion will no longer be receiving any updates. And that this current multiplayer season will be their last.
Last Friday, Ubisoft posted a message from their development team on their web blog. In it, they mused on all of the updates the game had gotten since it released in late 2020. This is followed by an announcement: the current 5.6 patch (released back in September) will be the final update to the game. Additionally, the current multiplayer Season 5 will be the last season. After that, they will cycle through seasons 3 through 5.
Its not terribly uncommon for games to reach the end of their post-launch update life a year or so after releasing. Even so, this sudden drop in support is somewhat odd for the game. The official website implied that the game would receive updates for more than a year, and the developers have mentioned a complete intention to add in additional features that are not yet present in the game.
Lastly, the announcement comes four months after the last update. Usually, when a final update is planned, the announcement that it will be final comes before, or at, the updates launch. Announcing this now, after the fact, seems to give the impression that Ubisofts hand was forced in some way.
To be frank, we suspect that Ubisoft found that supporting Watch Dog Legion was no longer profitable. Or perhaps they found that estimations would mean it wouldnt be profitable in the near future. Instead of continuing with their original plans, they likely pulled the plug early, much to the surprise of the developers themselves. THIS would be no surprise, especially from a company as large as Ubisoft.
Our sympathies to anyone wanting more from the game. What you have now is the most youre going to get.
