Though the tower defense genre does not usually come to mind when people think of virtual reality, Ghost Machine, an Austin, TX-based virtual reality studio, has taken the innovative approach and launched a Steam Greenlight campaign of their upcoming tower defense game Orc Assault. Though in early development, the game has strove to integrate virtual reality by having VR-specific designs of “Disneyesque 3D environments” with fully animated Orc, Troll, Ogre, and Goblin Invaders.
If Steam does Greenlight the project, Ghost Machine will release the game in late 2015. The reasoning for launching Orc Assault on Greenlight is to gather feedback from the Steam community and bounce ideas off of it. Oculus Rift, the VR headset that is still in development, will definitely support this game.
Besides Orc Assault, Ghost Machine is currently developing eight other quirky-sounding virtual reality games: MotorSport Revolution, Superbike TT, Invasion Force, Final Strike, Zombie Taxi Apocalypse, Ultimate Golf: Extreme Golf Combat, Warhawks: European Theater, and Arms Race. Information about Ghost Machine can be found here, and if you want to take a look at the gameplay for Orc Assault, you can check out the video below:
Though different, I think that a virtual reality tower defense can work very well as a virtual reality game, especially for players not interested in tower defense games.
