According to a report by The Verge, phone giant and overall communications company Verizon is in the alpha phase of what they call Verizon Gaming. This service would allow users to play games from their devices without having to download the game and in a quality higher than their devices could manage.
Verizon Gaming is already working on the NVIDIA Shield and is expected to release for Android phones in the near future. Both methods would require an Xbox One controller connected to the device for player inputs.
The closed alpha tests have involved 135 different games, primarily consisting of common Triple A titles like God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Destiny 2. The alpha focused on performance and not title diversity, according to an email sent to participants.
"This trial is primarily focused on performance. At a later date, when we advance the product, our library will consist of most or all of the top games you are familiar with - but at this early stage we're working on the engine and its parts."
The Android alpha tests will begin late January. There's no certainty as to if the service will come to iOS, PC, or console devices. Neither a release date nor pricing is available at this time.
This is similar to recent reports regarding Amazon and Google, who also are investing time and research into cloud game streaming services.
