So here’s a bit of news that may have slipped under your nose: Nostalrius is back.
While the original group of devs has retired from the whole ‘Vanilla WoW’ server following the takedown notice, another group, under the banner of the Elysium Project, have taken up the mantle and have recently launched a brand-new Nostalrius server, extremely publically. While the launch suffered from six (count em’, six) DDoS attacks, they’ve since recovered and are reporting heavy traffic from overeager players, with cues to log in capping at around 5000. So it’s clear there’s a lot of desire for these servers, and players are tripping over themselves to get a chance to experience the old server once more before the holidays.
As for why they’d do this when the first one was taken down by Blizzard, who showed no hesitation or regret in their decision, that’s still up in the air. Part of me suspects they might be so brazen and public with it is because this new Elysium team might actually be working for Blizzard this time around, who wants to keep their involvement on the down-low to avoid irritating investors, but I obviously have no evidence for that.
Anyway, if you’re interested, you can check out the website itself for details on how to join the party.
