Everyone knows that Valve is releasing a series of Steam Machines for living room PC play—which is still happening, even though things have slowed down significantly since they were first revealed—so it won’t be a surprise to anyone that Valve has recently released a new press release stating that they’ll be showing off some of their Steam Machines at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco. They’ve been showing off the Steam Machines at a pretty fast clip, so, I don’t think anyone’s mind is going to be blown by that particular announcement.
But if that was it, we both know I wouldn’t bother reporting on it.
No, what’s raised my interest is that in addition to the Steam Machines, Valve will also be unveiling the final version of the Steam Controller. This is pretty exciting, since the many delays and redesigns of the Steam Controller has been the primary factor in delaying the release of the entire Steam Machine consoles. So seeing the design that Valve has settled on (hopefully one that omits the trackpads) will be more than a little interesting.
But that’s not even the best part.
Because along with all that, Valve will be unveiling for the first time their new VR machine.
That’s right, they’ve been developing VR tech this whole time. And that’s… pretty much all we can say about it. It’s a VR machine, likely a competitor for the Oculus Rift. Anything else we hope to learn, we’ll just have to wait till the GDC.
So yes. Consider this pre-news—because you’d better believe when the GDC happens next month, I’ll be dishing out the full details. So raise the hype machine and strengthen those neck muscles, because pretty soon we’re going to have ourselves a good ol’ fashioned VR revolution!
