Steam has always been a confusing, burdensome, headache-enduring mess of rules and a lack of human regulation or moderation, particularly when it comes to adult games. For a long time, it seemed as if adult games as in, games with explicit, pornographic content were the only thing really off-limit on the platform, sans a few especially controversially violent/upsetting games. You could get around that by uploading a Steam-safe version and offering a free patch, but then that was shut down, too. BUT THEN, Valve decided to be even more hands-off than their already pretty darn hands-off approach, and decide that outside troll games (which, by their definition, only exist to annoy or con people), anything would be allowed on Steam. In their own words, its not our place to tell people what they can play.
Except that wasnt true because it continued to shut down and deny adult games, which made the whole question of what was allowed on the platform even muddier. So recently, they updated things again, asking that studios clearly label their adult/ultraviolent games, leave messages describing whats inside them, and thus fully informing the user about whats in them. With this change, it seemed like maybe Valve would start, finally, releasing non-censored adult games onto their platform.
And now, that giant tangled mess has finally born some fruit: the first purely pornographic non-censored adult game, Negligee: Love Stories, has just been approved by Valve and is available on Steam.
Does that mean the confusion is over? God no. Valve is terrible at moderation and will continue to be, which means there will always be problems with whats accepted and whats not. Plus, technically, Valve has not yet removed pornographic content from the list of forbidden content. And theres the fact that if Valve is also offering videos, well Steam could very quickly become overrun with porn and basically become Pornhub, especially if Valve decides they dont want to put their foot down.
Ive always believed it was silly to censor these kinds of games while ultraviolent ones were allowed. All the same, opening the floodgates could lead to Steam being made quite steamy. Which would be detrimental to just about everyone.
