Normally, video game news isn't that serious. But genuinely bad news makes its way into entertainment mediums. A mass shooting has taken place at the Madden NFL 19 tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, this weekend.
The shooter open fired during the event, killing two and injuring nine before turning the weapon on themselves and committing suicide.
The moment itself was captured live through the tournament's live stream. While primarily audio, it paints a good picture of what exactly happened during.
Watch the video here. Warning: Disturbing Content.
The video begins with Joe Rice and Eli Clayton competing in a match. A red dot sight can be seen appearing on Clayton's hoodie (at the heart) shortly before the video feed of the players cuts out. This is followed by gunshots. Nine shots are fired, where we hear scuffling, as well as one man stating, "What did he shoot me with?", before three more shots were fired, followed by screaming.
The shooter was later identified as one of the competitors, who had lost to Clayton earlier that day.
Our sympathies go out to the friends and family of the late Eli Clayton and Taylor Robertson, AKA Trueboy and Spotme.
UPDATE: EA has canceled the three remaining Madden Classic qualifier events in response to the event. The company will be looking into improving their safety protocols for future events.
