Dinosaurs are one of the most classic fictional themes there are in media. And nothing has hit that fame like the Jurassic Park franchise. And if this recent trademark is to be trusted, they're keeping it alive with Jurassic World Aftermath.
Universal Studios has recently registered a new trademark for an "interactive multi-media software for playing games" titled Jurassic World Aftermath. The trademark covers video games for PC, consoles, mobile devices, and VR.
But what is it?
The trademark doesn't tell us anything about the game outside of the title. It mentioning PC, mobile, and VR are most likely just extra steps to ensure that they can protect the IP on all platforms. The website URL JurassicWorldAftermath.com has been registered, but it doesn't go to anything at this time. JurassicOutpost[background=transparent], however, has an idea of what it might be. A few years ago, popular MMO developer Perfect World Entertainment was working on a game called Jurassic World Survivor. The game was to be an open-world survival game taking place after the events of the film Jurassic World. Eventually, the game was scrapped and development ceased.
Jurassic World Aftermath sounds like a perfect replacement title for such a game. So as such, current speculation is that the project is revived with a new title and a new studio.
It's possible that after the relative success of Jurassic World Evolution, the 2018 dinosaur park tycoon game by Frontier Developments, Universal is interested in keeping their feet in the video game industry. The game received average scores by critics and players alike, averaging around a 7 on Metacritic. The mobile game is less popular, though.
Maybe this too will be scrapped after a little while. Trademarks are typically an unreliable source of confirmation to go on. It may give us a hint as to what's being worked on, but it's by no means proof that it will one day be published. Only time will tell. Stay tuned.
