According to con organizers, the event was most costly than anticipated, and they are struggling to manage the finances accordingly. Kickstarter funded, the initial con goal was $25,000. The campaign raised a total of $56,498 in the end from 1,187 donors.
Unfortunately, the support we were anticipating in terms of ticket sales and sponsorships did not materialize.
. . .
As we built out our floorplan, invited guests, figured out lodging/travel arrangements, and confirmed activities, our costs started to grow exponentially.
The convention was originally scheduled for Friday, April 27 to Sunday, April 29 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Their goal was to achieve 10,000 attendees. The event organizers even secured a number of actors and actresses from Game of Thrones, Supergirl, and Star Wars.
They apologize to those put their faith in the campaign. They made sure to clarify that the con was not canceled, only put on hold. The organizers are currently working with venues and ticket holders to determine how to best approach a refund option.
Universal FanCon staff have suggested contacting any hotels or workplaces about rescheduling any reservations made for the event. Anyone who purchased a con ticket for this weekend will have it be honored whenever the convention takes place.
