Last time we found ourselves talking about the Uncharted movie, things were actually looking up for the movie, which has spent the past few years in something akin to development hell. It had a producer, found (another) director, there were new actors on board, and they were even going to start filming this summer. But then the universe realized it had to work harder if it was going to destroy this film once and for all, so COVID-19 happened and people just kind of assumed that the movie had suffered the latest in what’s honestly an astonishing series of setbacks.
But Sony, who seems determined to court disaster, has done the unthinkable over the weekend: it’s actually moved the release date of the movie forward, from October 8 of 2021 to July 16 of the same year.
We can safely assume using this information that they’re going to go forward with filming, in spite of the pandemic. In some ways that makes sense - I can only assume that there’ll be a lot of footage of jungles, ruins, and otherwise unpopulated areas. But it’s also known that the movie starts in Berlin (which is an urban center), and that it takes a lot of people to film a movie, so there’s always going to be at least kind of a crowd no matter where they decide to film.
But all of that is just guesswork. Sony hasn’t revealed a logic for their decision, so we’re just left to wonder what it could all mean.
