It seems that despite a long and storied history of not really “working” yet, movie companies and Netflix still insist on trying to turn video game properties into films and TV shows (and no, I do not think Castlevania worked, although I’ll grant I have not watched Season 2 yet). Ubisoft, of course, is a studio that can’t get enough of trying to license its IP, with everything from Assassin’s Creed to the Rabbids getting their own spin-offs. And it seems that they’re planning on taking two more IPs to the big and little screen, respectively: Werewolves Within and, way more excitingly, Child of Light.
If you haven’t heard of Werewolves Within - don’t lie, you totally have - it’s the same social deception game that’s existed for eons. Ubisoft just decided to turn it into a social video game for consoles, and now they’re taking it one step forward by trying to turn it into a movie, too. So it’s basically “Werewolf, the video game adaption, the movie”, which is an idea so bad I can’t even look at that line without feeling a little sick.
The Child of Light project, however, looks to be far more interesting. This UbiArt title, first released in 2014, used rhyming prose and a storybook astatic to tell a classic, beautiful story, and apparently, it caught the eye of writers Mishna Wolff and Tasha Huo when they were asked which Ubisoft property they’d like to try to adapt. So the plan, such as it is, is to adopt that into a multi-part Netflix series, which holds a lot of promise.
Naturally, however, these are all very much in the planning stage and are far from finalized. And while I could obviously not care less about Werewolves Within, I’ve got a lot of hope for this Child of Light thing.
Hopefully, it turns out better than all the other things.
