If major corporations like anything, its money. And what more controversial of a money making scheme than NFTs? Ubisoft has announced Ubisoft Quartz, an upcoming NFT platform intended to integrate gaming items into crypto, starting with Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.
The publisher recently released a new video, revealing their plans to implement blockchain-based microtransactions into the popular shooter franchise. According to the video, players will be able to purchase (using real-world money) a particular microtransaction. This will unlock a limited-time available cosmetic item in game, such as masks or weapon skins. Players that own them can then sell them on a marketplace to other players for a different price.
According to a Ubisoft representative with GamesIndustry.biz, the NFT items will only ever be cosmetic and will never be gameplay-altering. They also state that Ubisoft does not take a transaction fee when selling these items.
Community response, however, has been absolutely awful. Countless players have expressed frustration and discontent with Ubisoft for the implementation of NFTs in any capacity. The entire concept is not exactly a popular one, with many folks believing that they exist purely to trick foolish buyers into paying a large amount of money for items of no actual value. Others only see the platform as a method of financial fraud, tax evasion, and other sketchy practices.
Personally, we see this as a major sign of disrespect to the gaming community. People only make NFTs to sell for a profit. If someone already has a community (like Ghost Recon), then doing this is essentially them trying to capitalize on a trend in order to milk their community of every dollar they can.
There are potential ways to implement blockchain technology into the gaming culture, but this isnt it.
