Now, Ubisoft's history with Nintendo has been... shaky. They supported the Wii with a series of party games and Rayman platformers, but otherwise kept their main triple-A IPs at arm's length. They attempted to fix this with the Wii U, which actually got ports of some of Ubisoft's more hardcore games, and a brand-new title called ZombiU, but poor sales and bad hardware made the company give up any ambitions of fully supporting the system, and Ubisoft barely has a presence on the Wii U these days.
But according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, the Nintendo NX, which he and his company have gotten to play with for the past few month, is more than just a great console: it could be a legitimate game-changer.
"The new Nintendo [console] is a fantastic machine. It's really a new approach, it's really Nintendo, [which is] coming with something new again. We love it. I think, once again, the interface is very attractive. It's a machine that will be easy to use for all gamers. They have built in something that will give us chance to really have a different experience from what exists today. That's what I like - that they come with something new that is adapted to what we actually want now."
Is this legitimate praise, or hollow PR talk? It's hard to say at this point, as Ubisoft has already thrown its bones behind the NX. It's hard to imagine Nintendo created a mobile console that could well-and-truly compete with the PS4 or Xbox One and bring Nintendo back to the forefront, but then, we were equally dismissive of the whole "remote control controller" when the Wii was first announced, and look how that turned out. It's very possible Yves just sees something we don't.
Well, can't, in this case, we've only got second-hand accounts to go on here. But this is sure making me excited...
