What even is a blockchain?
A blockchain is a digital ledger of information that cannot be altered once written. It became popular because cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin use blockchains to keep track of their storage and transactions.
The director of Strategic Innovation Lab, Ubisoft's research facility, spoke to IGN about the possibilities the system has for the company.
" [we will] finally have real digital collectibles that cannot be replicated by anyone and can be 100 percent owned by you. Thanks to the blockchain, we can now have the equivalent of a digital Picasso, with the advantage that it's a lot more difficult to steal something on the blockchain than to steal a Picasso."
Admittedly, I'm not knowledgeable enough with cryptocurrencies to know how valid of a statement that is. If true, then the storage method should provide a secure way to manage everything from uPlay accounts, DLC, and even anti-piracy.
This isn't the first time a major game company has toyed with blockchains. Crytek previously announced their own cryptocurrency, known as Crycash. Little success was had when consumers had no interest in collecting the otherwise valueless currency.
