With “Games as a Service” becoming the next big thing, it’s only natural that Ubisoft would find itself in the spotlight, given how it’s one of the earliest adapters of the whole system with its 2016 critical question mark The Division, a game set in a post-terrorist New York where secret agents have to contend with armed militia and crazy people in a fight to reclaim the city for the sake of 1 percent of the population they haven’t killed yet. You’d think that with the game hitting the second year, Ubisoft would be looking to emulate Bungie and release a sequel, but apparently, that’s not the case at all. In fact, as suggested by the 25 new designer and artist positions Ubisoft has posted for Massive Entertainment, they plan to keep supporting The Division for the long haul.
The job descriptions for these twenty-five jobs all name-drop The Division specifically, although they do say they want to “expand” the game, which could be interpreted as a sort of sequel considering how these “games as a service” work. Plus, managing director David Polfeldt is on-record talking about the possibility of a sequel, although it might be a bit much to link his words about “potential of the brand” with the promise of a direct sequel.
I have to admit, at this point, Ubisoft is a little hard to read when it comes to these things. I would hesitate to say I find their approach to “games as a service” right, but I would say they’re an example of a good middle ground. Rainbow Siege 6 has been going strong for years now and it hasn’t changed its players for much more than they already paid, and while The Division has had paid expansions, it’s offered so enough free content on top of that to give even base-game players a reason to come back.
With 25 new positions, we’ll see how long they plan to keep this up.
