Twitch Removes "PogChamp" Emote Due to Attempted Coup of US Government

So yesterday was exciting, huh?

So the US capital was besieged by angry Trump supporters yesterday. In the process, four people were killed, at least two pipe bombs were found, angry white people waved confederate flags and raided the offices of senators and congressmen, and cops showed a level of complicity and acceptance they did not extend to BLM protesters in months past. It was a grim scene, and while it didn't stop Joe Biden from being confirmed as president, it's certainly a grim preamble to what we can expect on January 21st.

The consequences of this attempted coup are still ongoing: certain republicans are pinning the blame on antifa, Trump has been banned from Facebook and Twitter after he predictably failed to discourage the violence, and Twitch has removed one of the most popular and iconic emotes from their rotation after the man behind it, Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez, decided to go full red pill on Twitter.

"Gootecks", an extremely popular streamer, is the face behind the "PogChamp" emote, an emote so iconic that its got its own merchandise. He's been a "problematic" force on the site for a while now, questioning vaccine science and propagating the rumor that Bill Gates is somehow responsible for COVID-19, but the tweets he made during the attempted coup were so far out of line that Twitch finally decided enough was enough.

The tweet is as follows:

"Will there be civil unrest for the woman who was executed inside the Capital today or will the #MAGAMartyr die in vain?

The video will be aired soon on (banned dot video) & (theresistance dot video) and it soudns pretty grusome"

...followed by a sad face.

Twitch, after a few hours, responded with this:

"We've made the decision to remove the PogChamp emote following statements from the face of the emote encouraging further violence after what took place in the Capitol today...

...We want the sentiment and use of Pog to live on – its meaning is much bigger than the person depicted or image itself– and it has a big place in Twitch culture. However, we can't in good conscience continue to enable use of the image."

...look, we're living through some, uh... interesting times. The removal of one emote on a streaming service certainly doesn't seem to amount to much by comparison.

But... this is a gaming news website, so... here we are.
