Twitch, the popular video game live streaming platform, was bought out by Amazon a few years back. Shortly after that, they introduced a new premium service of sorts, known as Twitch Prime. This was an extension of Amazon Prime, available to anyone with an Amazon Prime account. Twitch Prime offered a variety of perks, including a channel subscription, in-game loot, and the occasional free game.
The service will remain more or less the same, offering the same perks as before, but the new official title is Prime Gaming. According to the branch director Larry Plotnick, this decision was to broaden their audience and appeal to more platforms. They also reassured that the change has nothing to do with Twitch.
"It has nothing negative to do about Twitch. We love Twitch. We're still very deeply partnered with them. But the goal here is really to reach as broad of an audience as possible, reach as many gamers as possible."
This also follows their naming convention with other services, offering the phrase Prime ____ for the related content. Prime Video and Prime Music are a few examples. Why not make it Prime Gaming?
If you already use Twitch Prime, then expect things to remain as usual. If you're new to the service, then the only difference is the URL you have to visit to learn more, which is now gaming.amazon.com.
