Despite failed house bills and vocal protests from viewers, the Army and Navy continue to use Twitch to both stream games and recruit youths into the United States military complex. And people continue to troll these streams, because if we can’t stop the military from stealing funds from infrastructure and public health, using tax dollars to commit war crimes, and generally promoting anti-American sentiment around the globe, at the very least we can make fun of them online.
Such an incident happened not long ago during the Navy’s 'Women Of Warzone' Twitch event, where they had several women playing Warzone to promote an upcoming $10,000 Call of Duty Warzone tournament hosted by the Navy itself. The stream wasn’t really anything to write home about: three women played Call of Duty, and talked about how the teamwork the game needs closely mirrors the kind of teamwork people in the Navy use every day. You know, that kind of baloney.
Now, it’s already been ruled in the courts that the Army and Navy can’t actually stop people from typing in their Twitch streams — it’s a violation of the first amendment, since they’re government bodies. But the Navy tried to bend those rules slightly with this stream, forcing people to only communicate via emoji, and forbidding all text chat.
So instead of making the usual quips, people just spammed the bomb and flame emoji’s.
The Navy couldn’t ban em’, and it certainly wasn’t as impactful as some of the other ways people have managed to troll the navy in the past… but considering what they had to work with, it was probably the best they could do. It’s not as if there’s any way you could misinterpret the emojis, given the history of this… I guess it’s a “meme” at this point.
In either case there was all of 500 viewers so it’s not like it was that big a deal anyway.
