Turtle Rock Announces New Game: It's a Co-Op Shooter

It's literally a turtle rock. It's in Mongolia.

Turtle Rock, the developer who originally made Left 4 Dead and Evolve (although they've recently retired it), is good at one thing and one thing only: cooperative first-person shooters. So now that they're done working on Evolve (which is, again, a cooperative first-person shooter), and they have all this free time for new projects, it's little surprise that they'd stick to the formula they know best. However, instead of facing off against zombies in an apocalypse, or giant, player-controlled monstrosities, you'll be fighting in a game that has "a strong dark fantasy element."

So, like Dark Souls, but a cooperative first-person shooter. So maybe that makes it more like Secret World.

"We are developing a new franchise set in an all new universe that leverages the style of gameplay our community loves and expects from Turtle Rock Studios. We're focusing on what we do best - heart-pounding moment-to-moment online co-op FPS action... There will be plenty of baddies to shoot up, but it is not a 'zombie game' or anything post-apocalyptic."

Here's the other bit we know, from this article from Gamesindustry: the game will be published by Perfect World, the same folks behind Neverwinter and Star Trek Online. Now, given the 'success' of Evolve turning free to play, and Perfect World's long history of free-to-play games, we can expect this unnamed title to follow a similar model. However, that's just speculation, and while it's firmly grounded, I'm not unconvinced that Turtle Rock has something of a grudge against that model, and will try to avoid it if possible.

But we'll have to see.
