Trains: The Unstoppable Force in Video Games

The soul train... Of death!

For as long as we can remember, trains have been a theme of general neutrality in life. From carrying people to cargo, they've interconnected locations across the globe for centuries. And now, we've reached the point where we can put trains in video games, but we've altered it a little bit. We took the missile-like momentum of a train, cranked it up to 11, and made them unkillable in video games. Gonna drive a bus at full speed going the opposite direction of the track in GTA V? No such luck. Get crushed. Even the train on the Golmud Railway map in Battlefield 4 that goes like 5 MPH will roll you on the rails if you dare get in its way. But sometimes, it takes you taking charge of the situation. Steal the train. Get on the machine gun. Mow down those who might take it from you.

And even then, trains aren't always employed in the traditional sense of staying on the rails. Sometimes, they're the replacement for fire-breathing dragons in Skyrim, with the dreaded "TOOT TOOT" being the last warning you get before you're set ablaze. And then, of course, there's the train LEVELS. Goldeneye, Shadows of the Empire, hell the Metro 2033 series is ALL ABOUT BEING STUCK IN A DAMNED SUBWAY SYSTEM. But, to be fair, these are all pretty diverse levels with their own difficulties. Fighting inside a train meant that you had to take the cover you could get, and sometimes the track for one train would end, requiring you to be nimble on your feet. The cramped complexity of it all makes for a challenging, yet fun and rewarding stage that leaves a good taste in the proverbial mouth, so to speak.

So keep on chuggin', dammit, keep chuggin' like a college grad working on his dissertation in the dead of the night.
