Total War Arena, the free-to-play strategy game, will be shutting down early next year.

Developers Creative Assembly recently announced their decision to close down the game servers, a little over a year after releasing as an open beta.

"We have learned so much during the development of Arena and we have grown incredibly close with the community and involved you deeply into our development process," Creative Assembly's Joshua Williams said. "It has been an absolute privilege to work with you all on this project, but unfortunately the results of Arena Open Beta Test did not meet all our expectations."

The final day of operation will be February 22, 2019. The servers will close as precisely 10 PM GMT.

Announced back in 2013, Total War Arena was the free to play variation on the popular game series. It was a collaborative effort between Creative Assembly and their parent company Sega. The game offered the ability to purchase premium characters and recolors for their armies, instead of keeping to the traditional initial purchase.

To compensate existing players, they're offering other Total War products, as well as premium time and virtual currency for their other free to play titles, such as World of Tanks.

In the meantime, the development team will retain their focus on the next game in the Total War series, Total War: Three Kingdoms. The game, set to release in March of next year, will focus on China and the associated organizations therein.
