"When we first released the game, I just thought it would be something that skaters would enjoy. And maybe that it would inspire skaters to start playing video games. First and foremost, I wanted the skaters to be happy with it. So it's definitely just a pressure I took on myself."
The main reason why Pro Skater was born (in 1999) was because Hawk, both a gamer and a skater, wasn't exactly happy with the representation of skateboarding in video games. So he wanted to make a game that was authentic and parallel to the actual skating culture. He didn't expect the series to grow so popular among gamers, but he was definitely happy with it, stating:
"The idea that it inspired a generation to start skating or to get interested in skating was kind of a happy accident."
Though I am clearly not speaking for everyone, the series definitely introduced me to skateboarding.
