Tokyo Game Show Cancels Amid Pandemic

You’d generally be correct to assume that most, if not all large gaming events will either be canceled or postponed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic: it’s happened to Gamescom, E3, PAX, ComicCon, and countless others whose names I can’t recall right now – and just the other day, the Tokyo Game Show, normally held in September, decided that it wasn’t going to assume the pandemic would be under control by then and has thus canceled.

Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and the situation remains unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation.

The plan is to host a digital event in its stead, much like the other canceled events and shows.

This news comes not long after Japan had a resurgence in COVID-19 cases when they decided, against the advice of experts, to reopen certain shops, stores, and services to the public. A problem that the United States seems keen to repeat, going on recent events, but I suppose that’s neither here nor there.

Details on how the digital event will look are forthcoming, but I imagine it won’t be too different from how E3 plans to accomplish it.
