Howard talks about a new animation system for a project currently in pre-production in an interview with Ted Price for the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Game Makers Notebook podcast. He remarks towards a project currently in full production using the old system.
When you consider Bethesda Game Studios rate of production, we are reaching the expected time for a new game. Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 released in 2008, 2011, and 2015 respectively. There is an average of 3-4 years between each title. It has been three years since the release of Fallout 4. So we could expect to see a new game next year. When they announced Fallout 4, they did so a year prior to its release, at E3 2014.
To further solidify this claim. Howard talks about the stress of finishing a game later in the interview.
You forget. If you haven't moved in a while, moving is terrible. Or having a child. Not terrible! But the pressures of it, you forget how hard it is to finish a game.
While it remains unconfirmed, there is a fair bit of evidence pointing towards Bethesda announcing a new game at this year's E3 press event. I can't say what that game might be, but it certainly sounds like they have something big planned.
