To the Moon took the indie game world by storm when it released in 2011. Since then, the tear-jerking interactive story has gone on to win critical acclaim and numerous awards. In an unexpected video announcement by Canadian game designer Kan Gao, To the Moon will be made into a feature-length animated film.
According to the press release, funding for the project is predominately coming from China, while production is taking place in Japan. The film project was made possible in partnership with Beijing's Ultron Event Horizon, whose CEO, Danyang Zhao, was responsible for bringing the animated film "Your Name" to China.
While it's yet to be said who, "first tier Japanese animation production companies are aboard" the project. It has been confirmed that Kan Gao will play a part in the script editing/advising process.
No further details have been provided, though they're excited to share more information as it becomes available to them. The idea of To the Moon being made into a movie has been a long desired idea, quickly brushed off by the idea that an indie game would never accomplish such a feat. It's good to see that anything can happen.
