Unfortunately, that's only half true. While the beta will certainly be an opportunity for players to discover the exciting new direction Titanfall 2 is going, PC gamers are, unfortunately, not going to get that chance, because on to the Titanfall blog, Founder and CEO of Respawn Entertainment Vince Zampella revealed that the PC version of the game would not be getting the open beta the console versions would be getting.
His logic is twofold:
"Two big issues from a development standpoint: hardware variety & 'min spec' optimization. We’re still making a lot of tweaks and changes to the renderer, the game, and effects so we haven’t run the game through the hardware compatibility lab yet to detect and handle a large variety of hardware - video cards, CPUs etc. Quite frankly, we aren't ready to deal with that yet, we are still making the game better. We also haven't done enough work to fully support our 'Min Spec' on PC yet."
So, there are some technical issues that need working out... that's fair. PC development can be hard if you've only ever done console development in the past. But, as it turns out, there's a third reason the PC version won't be getting a beta... a sneaker reason.
"Also, because the single player story has some wonderful secrets that we really want to preserve for launch, we also have to worry about leaks. Our wonderfully curious PC players have proven in the past that they will dig out anything they can, and there's a risk that they could spoil some of our single player."
I can respect that kind of dedication to your story, that you want to keep it a secret as long as possible... and PC gamers really do go out of their way to dig through everything. So, yeah, I can get behind this, even if it will make a certain section of our community rather angry. You guys get so many other advantages, surely a delayed beta is a small price to pay, right?
...Right?
