TimeSplitter's Fan Remake Releases 2nd Developer Blog

And it's still a long way to go...

Remember TimeSplitters? You should: while it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen or heard from Free Radical’s old party-style FPS, thanks to the whole “Free Radical not existing anymore” thing, the series is still considered a classic by most. Heck, TimeSplitters 2 is the highest-rated FPS on the PS2, and in case you’ve forgotten, there are a LOT of games on the PS2, so that acclaim is nothing to turn your nose up at.

And because of that reputation, people have been hungry for another game in the series since TimeSplitters: Future Perfect hit, which… you know, isn’t gonna happen. Not officially, anyway. Which is why a group of fans have come together to make their own TimeSplitters game, dubbed TimeSplitters Rewind, which would act as an updated remake of the well-known and loved second game in the series.

Sounds cool, right? It is, but the project has been slow-going since it was first announced. One developer update was released early in 2017, and now that we’re fresh into 2018, they’ve decided to release another, showcasing all the work they’ve accomplished since then. And while it’s impressive for a fan-powered remake… it’s still a long, long way from being a full game.

The video showcases a series of guns (most unfinished) and weapon animations, as well as some UI assets, sound design, and environments. It’s all good stuff, particularly the sound design, which seemed like it belonged in a triple-A game, but they're all just tiny pieces of the completed game.

There’s no indication from the video that development has picked up or anything either, so the likelihood of seeing this game released before 2020 is looking extremely bleak, if it’s even finished at all. But it’s also not impossible for the work to get picked up and finished by an actual developer… not likely, granted, but not impossible either.

I'll keep you all posted as it develops.
