Announced earlier this week, Long-time franchise developer THQ Nordic released an announcement trailer for the game.
The trailer kicks off with a performance of Sweet Victory, referencing a very popular scene in the show where the same song is performed as a sports halftime show. Strange portals start appearing, transporting SpongeBob into various other scenes from the show, including his experiences as a cave-man, a snail, a cowboy, and more.
While the trailer, which is fully animated, is appealing, it doesn't actually tell much about the game itself. Fortunately, the PC and console store pages for the game are already live, where we found some additional information.
- There will be over 30 costumes to choose from
- There will be 7 different "Wishworlds" to explore
- SpongeBob will be accompanied by "Balloon-Patrick"
- 101 Songs from the series will be included, One of which is Sweet Victory
- As for the plot, the Steam page explains in further detail
"SpongeBob and Patrick meet the mysterious fortune teller Kassandra who gives them a vial full of Mermaids Tears. Legend claims they grant the wishes of those who are pure of heart
Naturally, the two best buddies get overexcited and their flurry of wishes tears open the very fabric of space and time. All while releasing Cosmic Jelly onto Bikini Bottom and opening portals to strange Wishworlds in the process.
Now its up to our heroes to rescue their friends who got lost in the Wishworlds and bring back Bikini Bottoms most iconic buildings.
But Kassandra has her own devious plan"
All in all, this sounds like a pretty in-depth game. With the recent release of the SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom remake, interest and excitement for a new SpongeBob platformer of a similar style is high
Neither the trailer, nor the store pages, lists an official release date. They DO list the game as an option for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, however. Stay tuned.
