It’s been about five years since the PS4 and Xbox One first launched, which means it’s about time for people to start whispering about the apparently-inevitable launch of the next-generation of consoles. Granted, looking at it historically, we’ve still got some time – the gap between the PS2 and the PS3 was five years, but the gap between the PS3 and the PS4 was seven – which would suggest, obviously, that the time it takes to develop a console is growing. A logical conclusion, considering how much more expensive and powerful these machines are getting.
But according to a report made by Kotaku earlier today, sources are saying that the PS5 is still a long ways away… in fact, they’re suggesting that there might be a full two more years until we see the first hints of a PS5, suggesting that the console might launch in 2020.
The report claims that of the few dozen people spoken to, most of them hadn’t even heard whispers of the PS5 or been briefed as to its existence. Even studios who are planning releases for 2019 claim that there’s nothing on their radar that suggests a new PS5 release might be competing for their attention.
That’s not to say there isn’t some limited evidence that the PS5 is in the works – in fact, it would be foolish to assume otherwise. It’s just that everything suggests it’s still a ways off, not just the rumors passed along within the industry, but also because the PS4 Pro was only recently released, and most console developers like giving updated consoles a few years to breathe before making them outdated. Just look at the PS3 slim, for example.
But I think we can all agree: when it does come out, they’re gonna label it as P5 or something. Because the 5 kind of looks like an S. It’ll be really clever.
