So everyone’s back to talking about Apex, which is good, because despite EA’s recent shenanigans I still quite like the damn thing. And capitalizing on that new flux of attention is Drew McCoy, who told USgamer that this slow and steady release of content isn’t an accident or a failure of management: it’s exactly what they want.
"Most people don't realize how long it takes to make anything, and so a character for us takes about a year and a half to make. So we've been playing Wattson since early last year, but we have so much stuff in the pipe right now coming that people are always like, 'So what are you guys gonna do for this or that?' Like dude, we're thinking years ahead at this point."
And yes, this leads to the line we all know is coming:
"We're never gonna make an Apex 2; hoping next Season 72 is awesome. That's kind of where our head is at: how are we setting this up for the long term."
I like the folks at Respawn, but we have yet to see a live service game actually live up to that promise. Destiny was supposed to be live for 10 years or something, remember that? The closest we’ve gotten is maybe No Man’s Sky, and even that hasn’t been around for longer than three years at this point.
I guess if you count MMORPG’s as live-service games, that kind of sets a precident.
But at least those have subscription fees.
