Most of us know of the common phrase "the pen is mightier than the sword." To translate, a powerful word is more influential than a sharpened blade. Most video games prefer the use of a blade, but one particular game, developed by Double Zero One Zero (0010), actually turns to the pen to prove how powerful the tool can be. Titled "The Westport Independent," this "edit-'em-up" delves into the ideas of journalistic integrity within dividing politics.
A rebellion is festering behind the scenes, ready to pounce at a moment's notice. The government hasn't been doing exactly favors for itself, turning to greed and avarice during a time of strife and struggle. And then there is you--the editor. The one who approves and rejects press releases, edits press releases to your will, and ships them to your journalists for polishing.
However, you have more power than you believe. You have the potential to stuff the truth of the government behind closed doors and the ability to influence citizen's behaviors for better or worse. Do you want to protect the people from the government, or would you prefer to cause a full blown uprising that could result in many casualties and destroyed lives?
That will be up to you.
I have given the pre-alpha a shot, and so far, I have to admit that The Westport Independent is quite good, despite being in its barebones stage. Though I still am clawing my way through understanding the effects of my actions, I seem to influence the people's opinions substantially. For instance, during my first run-through, I influenced citizens to turn to the rebellious side by omitting paragraphs in press releases that actually make the government look like they're saviors. Unfortunately, by the end of the demo, the results of your actions aren't exactly revealed. Ah well, perhaps curiosity killed the cat.
It will be awhile before The Westport Independent will be released, but you are certainly encouraged to give the pre-alpha build a shot here. If you've played the game, what do you think of it?
